In defense of the DMV worker

Yes really, it’s not just a tag or teaser line. I’m really writing to to praise one of the most maligned of New York state; the Department of Motor Vehicle employee. You’ve seen the bad cartoons and commercials about the waiting and abuse delivered at the hand of DMV workers. Well….It’s changed a lot. I had some business with DMV recently and they were really nice, efficient, customer oriented and genuinely caring. No I wasn’t on meds.

In the last few months I’ve had to renew my license and get my 17 year old his learner’s permit. Between the Schenectady and Clifton Park DMV’s I saw an evolution. Magic..Pure and simple. No big waits, no hassles and SMILES. Real honest “We’re really trying to get you in and out with a smile” type of service. They did a great job of examining my documents for the new Enhanced Driver’s License and getting my son his permit in record time. No, it’s not driver-thru type speedy service but then again I want them to make sure I am who I say I am.

It did my grizzly old heart good to see the “upstate state of mind” showing up at DMV. In a time when it’s popular to demonize our state employees, it seems they are trying to provided the best service they’re allowed to.
