Ice Fishing? Somebody explain this...

As an upstater I love the outdoors, Summer, Spring, Winter and Fall, but for the life of me I don't the ice fishing thing. Hmmm, lets go out onto a sheet of ice, cut a hole and freeze to death waiting for a fish (must be libations involved)....Nope, not happening. I does seem, however, that a few gents from upstate found fit to enjoy the freezing temps and make their wallets a bit lighter by breaking the law. Seems these enterprising guys thought it a good idea to take 494, yes, 494 perch from the depths of Lake George.

Now understand that the legal limit for these perch is 50 a day per person. 50 a day is quite a feat, may I add, but these yahoos had to chance it and go for broke. They had the illicit fish hidden under their ice shanty's, the seats of their ATV's and goodness only knows where else. The fines for the overage is 250.00 per man PLUS 5.00 bucks a fish for a total of over 2500 smackers. 2500.00 would have made a heck of a haul of lobster and really good seafood if they were so inclined to have a fish fry. Ya know, now I'm wondering what they were using for bait...Dynamite? Looks like they were the suckers....

Here's my idea of ice fishing....
